" …Pioneers, Patriots and Planters is an excellent example of how meticulous documentation can be used to create a very readable and enjoyable family history…. The author's excellent notes and bibliography should be studied by aspiring family historians as a model….[It is] a historical and genealogical feast that will leave each reader savoring the experience…."
Carolina Herald, (publication of the South Carolina Genealogical Society), Fall 2004. Review by John L. Andrews.

" …This (book) is far from the usual family history. It is incredibly well documented and carefully organized into manageable chunks. An exceptional job is done in placing the family into its historical, social and economic situation….Even those who are not researching Southern families will be challenged to explore the social and economic climates that our ancestors knew to better understand them and to write better family histories. "
Federation of Genealogical Societies Forum, vol. 16, #3, Fall 2004. Review by Grace Horner.

I am pleased to inform you that we have selected your title, Pioneers, Patriots and Planters: A Historic Narrative of a Woolfolk family, First Settlers in Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia, by Elizabeth Carrow-Woolfolk (2004), for a full-length review in an upcoming issue of the Quarterly…"

" …Here is a book that is more than the history of a family—most impressive! It places the family in the context of the times in which they lived, and in the process, provides the reader with a history of the settlement of Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Georgia….This well-documented, highly readable book sets a new benchmark for those who aspire to write their own family histories. "
Tennessee Genealogical Magazine, vol. 51, #1, 2004. Review by Loretta Bailey.

" …Elizabeth Carrow-Woolfolk’s (book).…is an exemplar of modern genealogical work. The research is thorough and professional, the documentation a model of excellence, and the kinship group under examination is thoroughly enmeshed in historical context….Woolfolk’s work stunningly portrays an extended kinship group as it moves through history—through both time and space."
The Journal of Southern History, vol. 71, #2, May 2005. Review by Carolyn Earle Billingsley.

" …The book covers from 1650 to 1880 and includes examples of original documents, family charts, illustrations of the family homes and migration routes. This narrative history also details how many other families made their way to Georgia….The book is one of the most important family histories to be written in a generation. The author has also published a family supplement."
Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004 (Living Section). Review by Kenneth H. Thomas, Jr.

" …In reading Pioneers, Patriots and Planters I found an amazing story and compelling reading of the history of the Woolfolk family and of our country….I found myself walking in the footsteps of my own early ancestors as my family lived in the same communities and counties. Dr. Woolfolk has written a detailed history of her husband's family and, more importantly, telling the story of who they were and how they lived their lives….Dr. Woolfolk has written a book that should be a standard or guide for anyone who does family history research in Colonial Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee or Georgia….This book is a keeper…and should be mandatory reading for all genealogists…"

" …This book (Pioneers, Patriots and Planters) is a scholarly, historic narrative of the settlement of the South describing a typical family's journeys, starting in the mid 1600s and continuing its migration through the Southern states of Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina and Georgia. Dr. Wooolfolk has reconstructed this history from land deeds, wills, court proceedings and other documents to achieve a wonderful genealogical chronicle of a family that includes connections to some of our country's early leaders such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Zachary Taylor, James Madison, Andrew Jackson, Merewether Lewis and Robert E. Lee."
The North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal, (Volume XXX, No.2 -- May 2004). Review by Raymond A. Winslow, Jr., Editor.

" …Woolfolk has traced the first five generations in some detail, following the several branches into North Carolina and Kentucky, but thereafter follows the branch from which her husband descends through South Carolina to Georgia. Several charts enable the reader to identify the connections between….individual families.…the endnotes appended to each section reveal extensive research….Copies of significant documents are reproduced and numerous photographs, maps, and plates show the localities of family residences."
The Virginia Genealogist, vol. 48, #189, January-March 2004. Review by John Frederick Dorman, Editor.

" …The entire text of this work is well written, quite readable, and profusely documented. "
The South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research, vol. 33, #2, Spring 2005.

" …The primary character in this book is John Woolfolk, 1781-1861, of Augusta, Georgia and his ancestors and descendants, however, it is much more than a family history. This book is also a comprehensive history of the early settlement of the states of Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia, of which the Woolfolk family were some of the earliest settlers. The book is the story of a small group of families, neighbors, friends, and relatives who traveled together, lived in the same communities, intermarried, and their descendants who moved on to settle other areas. The genealogy and events in this book are fully documented. In addition to the names of people involved, the book shows the reactions of those people to local and national events at the time. The pages of the book contain maps, illustrations, pictures of historic homes, diaries, land plots and deeds, wills, court proceedings and military records. Some surnames mentioned are Adams Alexander, Baker, Barr, Murray, Phillips, Taylor, Walker and Waller. This book is a great history of the early settlement of the South, as well as the ideal for a family history. "

" …A new work by Elizabeth Carrow-Woolfolk is an excellent example of how a family history can provide much more than dates and places of events….Details about what life was like in specific localities make the narrative especially interesting….Anyone with a connection to the Woolfolk family would be proud to have a copy of Pioneers, Patriots and Planters, which is sure to create a new standard for anyone wishing to produce a credible family history."
